The Meganterreon was a saber-toothed cat that lived in Africa, Eurasia, and North America. Smilodon populator and Smilodon fatalis are likely to have descended from the smaller Smilodon gracilis. The American lion was significantly larger than Smilodon fatalis, weighing up to 600 pounds compared to Smilodon’s 400-600 pounds. Its size and strength would have given it an advantage in a physical confrontation, as well as its hunting strategy, hunting in packs which would have made it more efficient in taking down large prey.
