I'd say the workmanship, fit and finish on mine are about 99% as perfect as the Elliot I owned years ago and easily on par with G7 or any of the mass ... The vast majority of my capo use is as follows: Elliott, Stokes, Kat-Eyz. Coincidentally, or not, that is also the quantitative order in which I own capos by those makers. I could easily recommend any of them. The Kat Eyz has a "top gate", if I'm interpreting what you mean correctly - the top unclamps and then swings open to get the capo on and off.
